Hi,
I have to make a quick decision concerning the purchase of an autochanger
of some-magnetic tapes for use with ADSM. The server is an AIX machine
(RS/6k - 560). The data to be backed up is a lot smaller than some/many
discussed in this list - no penta/tera bytes....I guess that for the first
year it'll be 20-30 GB, doubling at the second year. No databases involved,
"just" general purpose use at an Engineering department in a university.
My options are:
1. Exabyte EXT 210 T/2 (10 cartridges, 2 drives, 70GB uncompressed)
2. Exabyte EXT 210 T/2-8900S (10 cart., 2 drives, 200GB uncompressed)
3. IBM 7331-205 (20 carts., 2 drives, 140GB uncompressed)
4. IBM 3570-B01 (20 carts., 1 drive, 100GB uncompressed)
5. Quantum DLT 2700T (7 carts., 1 drive, 105GB uncompressed)
6. Quantum DLT 4700T (7 carts., 1 drive, 140GB uncompressed)
Questions:
1. To ADSM development - #4 (3570, the Magstar MP) is not on your h/w
list (on the WEB); as for the Quantum drives (#5,6), other models are
mentioned there (2000T, 2000XT, 4000). What are the plans for availability
of support for these Changers (mainly for #4 ) for AIX servers ? Please
specify dates (even if estimated/approximate).
2. Are there any user experiences with these drives (good or bad) in
conjuction with ADSM usage, as well as any other issues.
3. Can anyone shed light on the reliability of the 3 1/2 technologies
of the above drives (8mm. + 8mm. Mamoth, DLT and Magstar) ?
4. What (if at all) is the merit of 2 vs. 1 drive ? Can ADSM exploit
this feature where available (I guess the 2 issues can be involved -
speed and reliability) ?
5. Anyone willing to briefly explain (or refer me to some url) about
the differences between the "hellical scan tape" vs. Linear tapes ?
Your fast response would be greatly appreciated.
