I believe that ADSM will make a tape Read/Only if it gets write errors on
the tape.

I am surprised to hear that you have had so many tapes go bad.  Check the
lights on the drive to make sure that it does not need to be cleaned.
I'm also curious to know which model drive you are using (i.e., is it the
same as I am using!), and how long you've been using it.
