Our experience is that HSM works very nicely unto itself, migrating and
recalling files. You have to properly gauge the real file system size
to accommodate worst-case file sizes, which have to fit through the
bottle's neck as it were. HSM is relatively low in its evolutionary
path, meaning that its method of operation is still relatively crude:
it employs a dsmmonitord which loops looking for threshold exceeded,
and so tends to consume considerable CPU time.
The major problem is that HSM remains to be fully integrated into
ADSM. At this point it is something of an outboard agent, in terms of
definitions, commands, and operation. This is reflected in the history
of APARs, ongoing, regarding its problems in working with ADSM Backup.
IBM is continuing to resolve these problems and thus things are improving.
My summary opinion is that HSM is dandy. I would recommend it.
