Since R30 processor complexes are often used as ADSM servers, I'm
posting this here...
Beware a design deficiency on the 601 processor card. At the bottom
left hand corner of the board there is a power transistor contained
within a heat sink. The only thing holding that assembly to the card
is a little piece of double-stick tape (!!!), which readily comes loose
and allows the transistor to readily break off the card. One of our
R30s was dead-on-arrival because of this. For this kind of mis-design
to get out of IBM there cannot be any meaningful design review, as it
reflects inept engineering. I'm hoping that the engineer responsible
for this has gone on to another line of work.
