What the SAPDBA tools, BRBACKUP and BRARCHIVE are doing under the covers,
is issuing the Oracle commands: alter tablespace begin backup, and
alter tablespace end backup. What happens between these two commands is
the actual backup with whatever backup tools you want to use, for example,
ADSM backup/archive commands. What BACINT does today is an ADSM archive
command. The next BACKINT release, due within the next couple of months,
will support oracle on raw devices and will also be updated to use the
ADSM api.

To do online backups of oracle databases installed on file systems, you
do not need to use the SAPDBA tools, but they are the "SAP Approved" tools.
You could use the alter tablespace procedure with ADSM yourself, you could
use DataTools SQL-BackTrack (for filesystems or raw devices), or any of the
other techniques we describe in the redbook, SG24-4335 Using ADSM to Back up
Databases.
