I use logical volumes and I haven't had any problems.  The only issue
that I had was the amount of space that is unusable because ADSM
subtracts 1mb for overhead and divides the remaining value into 4mb
partitions.  So if you allocated (4) 250mb logical volume partitions
for 1000 mb you would only have 996 mb of usable space.
If you don't use logical volumes you can allocate the precise amount,
taking into account the 1 mb of ADSM overhead.

I try to use SMIT whenever I can when dealing with AIX, it seems to
make my life easier from an administrative standpoint.
