Matthias,
The application type has no hidden usage. It is only
used to display with the node name on a 'query node'
Admin command.
Whoever writes an API application is responsible for
the naming convention they use on filespaces. It should
be unique to that application.
It is possible for an application to use a virtual node
name and thereby separate its data.
