The attached report sheds some new light on AT&T's
position vis-a-vis Lotus Notes.

Those of us who had been speculating that AT&T would
elect to stay in the Notes fold, albeit in a changed
role, have been proved right.

I am sure the position of all the other common
communication carriers, who in October had agreed to
deploy Notes Public Network Services over their
networks, had something to do with today's developemnt.
These other carriers (British Telecomm, Deutsche Telekom,
Telecom Italia, Telstra, Nippon T&T, Telekom Malaysia,
NTT Data Comm Systems, Unisource, US West, Southern New
England Telecomm (SNG), CompuServe, WorldCom, and
IBM Global Network) have been buoyed by what LDC
delivered with LNPN R4, and by the features promised
with R4.2.

BASKING RIDGE, N.J.

AT&T Corp. plans to integrate the Lotus Development
Corporation's forthcoming Lotus Notes 4.2 server with
AT&T's Internet-based service offerings.

The new Notes server, to be available in the 3rd
quarter, will be used by AT&T for collaboration
services and World Wide Web-based applications
such as electronic commerce, marketing and
publishing.

In a press release, AT&T, IBM and and IBM's Lotus
Development Corp. unit said they will continue joint
efforts to "optimize" Notes-based platforms to meet
the needs of AT&T and other public network carriers.

AT&T also said it will accelerate its world-wide
deployment of Notes in its internal management system.
According to a New York Times report an AT&T executive
familiar with the company's plans said AT&T expects to
double the number of internal Notes users to 40,000.
An AT&T spokeswoman said she didn't know where that
figure came from. She confirmed that AT&T plans to
accelerate internal Notes use but said no target
numbers were available.

IBM expects that Lotus Notes 4.2 server software will
directly and natively support key Web protocols, such as
HTTP, HTML and Java technology, which will allow users
with either Notes clients or Web browsers to access home
pages or electronic commerce applications. That
technology will allow all Internet browsers to benefit
from the full range of collaborative functionality
provided by Lotus Notes, IBM said.

AT&T, IBM and Lotus also will work together to extend the
scalability and performance of Notes-based platforms to
meet the requirements of public networks. The three
companies will also continue to promote the development
of large-scale Notes-based applications through their
membership in the Multimedia Services Affiliates Forum,
a group in which major telecommunications carriers are
developing the standards to allow interoperability of
such applications around the world.
