Bob, using the Informix backup utilities to disk and then using ADSM
to back up the created files is one of the alternatives we discuss in
the redbook. It's the best approach if you can afford the disk space,
because it better ensures database integrity, and you can perform
online backups (and restores with informix!). Informix provides backups
for one or more dbspaces so you don't necessarily need to have enough
extra disk space for the entire database...only one dbspace at a time.

You can also use the technique to issue ADSM backup or achive commands
directly to the files that comprise the database, control files, logs.
This must be done with the database shut down, and you must ensure that
you capture all the files. If you think only one dbspace changed, it's
not good enough to just back up that dbspace because it could have
relationships with data in other dbspaces, and therefore, you could
introduce an integrity exposure. We also suggest using archive instead
of backup so that you can group the files together using the description
parameter. That way you can be sure which files were backed up at
the same time in case you need to do a restore.

There are examples in the redbook (do yo have the latest one published in
Jan, SG24-4335-01) for doing the ADSM direct approach, as well as using
informix utilities such as onarchive. The ADSM direct approach only
works if informix is installed on file systems. If on raw devices, you
could use ADSM directly if you use the unsupported utility, ADSMPIPE.

Informix and ADSM development plan to have the new Informix backup
utility, onbar, back up directly to ADSM. This support is planned for
the next refresh (or at least by mid-year).
