This user is running the absolutely most current IRIX client:

While restoring a directory in dsm I got the message

"Unexpected error, report how you got this."

What I did was:

call up dsm (as non-root), but I have permissions on the directory to
restore into.

get a directory listing of /Backups/ralph on host geoffrey.
Selected the full directory (Shift+Right Mouse), entered the file
directory to restore.

I tried it twice, and I get the same error.
