We also have the same concerns. We are using the MVS server to
backup 50+ Novell servers, 50+ HP-UX servers, AIX and ATT
servers, Windows and OS/2.
When we installed ADSM last year we tested doing a full
restore of a Novell server across the WAN. It took 6 hours to
get 550 MB restored. The users are still doing weekly backups
to tape, should they need to do a full restore. In situations
where the administrators are rebuilding servers and are not
presssed for time, they will use ADSM, and just let the restore
run in the background so to speak.
Some things we have found to help; start several restore
sessions at one time, use colocation, use DIRMC.
Something to keep in mind; the piece of wire that exists
between your MVS machine and the server can not transmit data
as fast as the internal bus, and probably won't for some time.
Our administrators and user community are made aware of the
downside of recovery and elect to go with ADSM for the
convenience of not having to do tape backups every night.
As I said earlier we have the same concerns regarding the
amount of time a full restore requires, particularly with these
bigger drives. We have not gone without catching heat from
users over the length of time required to do large restores.
Anything IBM can do to reduce the time required for large
restores would be greatly appreciated!
