The ADSM Windows client 1.2L7 (and earlier) has an annoying habit.  If
you press the STOP button, it does not take effect until the current
(backup) file processing completes.  At least it looks like this is the
behavior.  With a slow network and on a huge file, this is an
unacceptably long time (can be forever on certain kinds of line
problems using Trumpet Winsock & SLIP).  Other Winsock clients don't
experience this type of behavior.

There may be other manifestations of this behavior, for example when
the server causes everything to wait for a while (maybe tape mount, for
example).

Telling Windows to shut down the ADSM Backup Client is a sure way,
then, to lock up my PCs.
