ABSTRACT
Problem in the ADSM compression algorithm
DETAIL
IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ALL ADSM CUSTOMERS USING COMPRESSION
On March 3, 1995, IBM discovered a problem in the ADSM compression
algorithm. Although the situation rarely occurs, IBM feels that it is
important to notify all ADSM users of the situation, and inform
them of the corrective maintenance which must be applied.
In very unique situations, the ADSM product may truncate compressed
files during backup or archive. If you have chosen not to use
compression, or do not allow ADSM clients to specify compression,
then you will NOT be affected by this problem.
All client versions on any ADSM server are potentially affected by this
problem, regardless of platform type. This includes the original WDSF
clients, the precursor product to ADSM, and any ADSM API clients that
use compression.
The ADSM team is currently testing a fix, which will be available on
ADSM's Internet anonymous ftp server, index.storsys.ibm.com, and on
Compuserve (go IBMSTORAGE) on Friday March 10. The fix will be
available from IBM's distribution centers worldwide from one to two
weeks from March 10.
The client APAR and PTF numbers are as follows:

DOS IC09468 IP20332
OS/2 2.x IC09469 IP20333
OS/2 1.3 IC09475 IP20339

HP IC09467 IP20331
Ultrix IC09477 IP20341
SCO IC09476 IP20340
The above maintenance will prevent the problem from occuring on
all future backups and archives that use compression. Until the above
maintenance is applied, it is recommended that an uncompressed backup
be performed on only those files previously backed up with compression.
The IBM team will be providing a mechanism to assess which backup or
archived files could be affected by this rare problem. Updates will
be posted as they become available via this forum and Informational
APAR Number II07777.
