Hi Martha,

What is your paper on? I might be interested.

The reason you can't see anything when you issue the DIR command, is because
the permissions of the /adsm/pub directory do not include READ privs.
However, they do include EXECUTE privs. This means that if we know the
names of the files that you put out there, we should be able to "get" them.
We just can't see them. Not sure why IBM did this, but probably to prevent
hackers from using their ftp server as a dumping ground.

At Cornell, we are running ADSM/6000. I have written/am writing a bunch of
UniRexx execs to automate some monitoring functions. For example, I have
execs which do the following:

1) Make sure that each storage pool has sufficient capacity. This is measured
by the number of "useable" tapes, and by the estimated total free
capacity remaining on these available tapes. If either falls below a
certain threshold, Email is automatically sent to a list of administrators.
Also, if any tapes have read or write errors, an Email is sent. Or if
the number of passes exceeds a certain number, Email is sent (we use 8mm
tapes, so this is an important issue for us). All of these conditions
(if any) are included in one Email. It's sort of an exception report for
   tape issues.

2) If any unusal messages appear in the activity log for the previous day,
these are sent via Email to the list of administrators. Messages are
filtered out by message number. Some messages come in pairs (i.e.,
the session start message is paired with the session end message). If
the session end message is not normal, then the session start message is
   not omitted.

3) If backups do not occur for a node, email can be sent to the administrator
for that node. You can specify how many days can elapse before this is
triggered. This exec isn't finished yet, and is proving to be a bit
tricky. The email address and other parameters are coded into the
contact field in the node description.

Once I get these (and other utilities) polished up some, I'll probably
share them with others somehow.

..Paul
