Hi All I understand raitcan only work with single tape units and not changers. Do you also need a minimum 3 tape units to do rait, will 2 be ok. Can someone please answer these for me. regards Joseph

Joseph Sirucka on Thu 20/03 15:42 +1100: I don't think it can treat a whole changer as a device. just make the third tape /dev/null, the RAIT code recognizes this and doesn't actually write to /dev/n

That's the behavior if you just specify two drives, like: rait:{/dev/nst0,/dev/nst1} You can read either one as a straight un-striped backup. Sort of -- if it gets an error on reading the first one,

The pair of tapes (or triple of tapes, etc.) is one logical tape to amanda when it is doing RAIT. If it is done as a two-drive stripe, then both tapes are identical -- they have the same label on the

Dusty memory here. Wasn't there something about using a minimum of 3 devices for RAIT, the remaining one being /dev/null? Or was that just for striping? -- Jon H. LaBadie jon AT jgcomp DOT com JG Com

Do you mean that amanda will change the label of one tape to match the other if they do not already match? If it were striping, I thought there would be some ordering necessary so that the labels, or

Just wondering if RAIT would allow 'RAIT 1' type thing where you can write two tapes at the same time (one goes offsite, for example). At the moment we have to run a loopy dd script to copy the origi

Add-on question. How does the index deal with mirrored tapes. If one of the pair is overwritten or amrm'ed, does the index still know about the other tape? Does this imply the index is 2x the size fo

Good point... But I think if you use amrmtape you are effectively saying that the tape is no longer in use therefore you wouldn't use amrmtape if you intend reusing the tape(s). So amrmtape behaviour

I misspoke. I was thinking of a situation where one tape of a mirrored pair might be "archived". I guess the command in that case is something like "amadmin no-reuse" (syntax unchecked). IIRC that pr
