An update... First, thanks for the wild guess, Paul (nowait vs wait in xinetd.d). Setting nowait resulted in port unreachables... I've started using ethereal to see what the traffic looks like and it

Thanks for the help Paul, Though I'd been through those links, it did end up pointing me in the right direction. The problem was in maxdgram setting. This defaults to about 9100 bytes in MacOS and I
