With an AIX adsm client scheduled to do an incremental backup every night, what happens if a VG that is normally varyon is varyed off ? Or a filesystem that is normally mounted is not mounted. Will a

No, ADSM won't assume the files are deleted. You have to be able to actually run an incremental against the file system so that ADSM can check the directory before it will declare a file to be delete
