Dear NetBackup Gurus, I have inherited installation of NetBackup 3.4 with Sun L1000 library and DLT7000 drives. My tape drive type is set to DLT. At the moment I am getting 30-40G per DLTIV tape (wit

Aleksandr, Actually, using DLT or DLT3 won't change you performance. Are you sure that the tape was written the first time in DLTIV format? The first time you write the tape, you are setting up the f

Greg, Thanks a lot for your answer. I am not sure how the tape was written the first time. "vmquery" shows that all my tapes have media type "DLT cartridge tape (11)" - Should I "bplabel -d dlt3" for

The different types are only to separate media and drives. They don't affect performance or capacity. That is controlled by the OS and the device you use to write to it. If you only have one drive ty

Darren, Thank you for your answer. Can you suggest how I can get more per tape capacity? Should I relabel tape using different device (at the moment /dev/rmt/0cbn on Solaris 8) ? DLTIV tape with DLT7

I don't think you can do that without changing your drive type as well. I wouldn't bother. I might try using 'dd' on a scratch tape to validate the capacity of them. What 'device' name do you use for

Darren, Thanks a lot for your explanations. I have got the part about DLT / DLT2 / DLT3 being "bins" to keep drives separated. Also, will do dd test, thank you for suggestion. I am using Soalris 8 de

Likely, yes. I'd want to make sure that I had the most recent 'st' patches for the OS installed. The 'c' and 'u' devices are identical, and both are normally set to use the highest density setting an

There are two possibilities that I can see: If your DLTIV media were first used written with an earlier DLT tape drive like a DLT4000, that tape drive will write a header on the tape in a non user-ac

That's not correct for DLT. Writing a block at BOT will change the density for the remaining writes. Writing to any other location on the tape will continue using the existing density. So a simple 'm

I seem to remember that slow, or stop-start data rates to the drive can significantly reduce the amount of data on tape. just a thought -- Do you want a picture of your brain - volunteer for a brain
