I don't remember doing anything special to backup my UNIX or NT 4.0 clients other than install the client. For Novell, however, I did have to provide a backup userid and password when I did the setup

On UNIX and NT we use inetd to connect. So a port is opened via bpcd and it becomes the spawner of all other processes. In the case of NT and 2000 we use the SYSTEM account to spawn other processes,
