My assumption is backward compatibility. I believe that earlier versions didn't have the option at all, so when it was added it was added off as default. Same reason you can't change anything else o

Yes, for many people it does, such as not being able to use auto media verify for one thing. I suppose this is a site-specific issue, but I cannot imagine not using that feature so I use my own tape
