Not to stick my nose in here -- is this also true for disk full conditions? In that case, you'll get a catalog value that is larger than the on disk value. I never knew if there was a safe way to fix
FWIW, my original advice was based on my incorrect conclusion that this was a file count problem. It was not. It was a volume size problem. As for your original question, I don't know. Easily tested

Will it be obvious if you mess up a volume in this way? For example, if one sets the number in the catalog smaller than on the actual volume, will it blow up noisily, or will it just fail to restore
