First, since that looks like a unix-like target, is there some reason you don't want to use rsync over ssh instead of configuring rsyncd? You can test if the problem is your rsyncd config by running

I wouldn't agree with that, but the security weaknesses are different. With ssh keys, security depends entirely on protecting the private side of the key pair. Anyone who can be root or the backuppc
