Making sure I understand what you're facing - is the event browser taking a long time to come up, or is it taking a long time to process through filter settings (say, to show only "critical" events)?

yes you are quite right. It took so much time to process filter settings each time. There is no error in the nv.log file and the version which i have right now on my machine is SQL Server 2.65.0252 S
Hm...perhaps the event log is enormously large - is the schedule set to routinely dump the log? How many events are currently in the log? Check scheduled events by entering "at" from a command line.
On a related note, my event browser recently stopped storing events to the SQL database. I get an error message saying trapd is no longer storing messages to the database. I reinstalled ODBC and Netv

You can just type "event" on your dos prompt and go to interactive SQL to check in the database. Say SELECT * from events and execute it. Or select "clear database" option in the Databases tab under
