Just wondering, are there any types of Windows servers, which otherwise require daily backup, that would not require a daily SystemState backup? (file servers? apps servers? etc)

If app configs aren't changing, but only data is, is SystemState backup required at the same frequency as the rest of the server?

As a 'de facto' rule, the System State needs to be backed up whenever changes on a Windows server happens. For servers that plays 'roles' like AD, IIS, Databases, etc., it is always advised to run backups daily.

Static servers - no registry changes - mainly don't need daily backups. Standalone File servers (not clustered), printers (static ones that does not update printer drivers automatically), static web servers, etc may not need daily backups.

The best answer to this is: Observe. What applies to me may not apply to you.

I think the SystemState backup need to depends on service type (like IIS, AD, Exchange, MSSQL, Sharepoint) and also backup strategy. If you are doing file level backup only to protect your system, in case of server corruption, you will need to restore file level together with SystemState level as full recovery.

In another alternative, i would prefer image level backup of system drive as consistency, such that whenever system corruption, just get the image level restore and everything goes back to the state of image point, and then perform file level restore. It would be much faster on both backup and recovery as image object, and ever growing size on systemstate backup.

Problem to backup Systemstate

Hello, I have a problem to do a systemstate backup in my Domain Controller Win 2008 server.
I did one manually at the dsmc console, after this i tryed again with no sucess.
I tryed with schedule but always happen the same thing, Start like this:

Code:
11/28/2013 13:40:10 --- SCHEDULEREC OBJECT BEGIN DC1_INCR 11/28/2013 13:37:0011/28/2013 13:40:13

After the schedule start, some time later the schedule restart and In the summary with q event * * always give me the status severed at the end of the schedule.

My dsm.opt is like below, but i already tryed to changing the dsm.opt without any VSS parameters, just leaving the Option ALL DOMAIN LOCAL
HTML:
tcpserveraddress 172.23.1.100
tcpport 1500
nodename dc1
snapshotproviderfs VSS
domain ALL-LOCAL
 passwordaccess generate
INCLUDE.SYSTEMSTATE ALL MC_30D_DISK_ABS
errorlogret 5,D
SCHEDLOGRETENTION 5,D

include.fs c: snapshotproviderfs=vssSNAPSHOTPROVIDERIMAGE VSS

After this I tryed to do just a systemstate backup and that return i received:
HTML:
12/01/2013 22:17:20 ANS1512E Scheduled event 'DC1_SYSTEMSTATE' failed.
Return code = -1073741819.12/02/2013 13:15:49 ANS1149E No domain is available for incremental backup.
The domain may be empty or all file systems in the domain are excluded.
12/02/2013 14:20:47 ANS1577I The Windows console event handler received a 'Close' console event.

RESUME:
I just can backup the C: or D: and i just have one backup of systemstate, i can't make another systemstate backup.
Any suggestions or IDEAS???

Thank u
