What characters need to be escaped in select statements (and how?)

Have a need to do a few million select queries on filenames that have all manner of characters in them. Ones I know that break a standard select statement include single quote, double quote, and parenthesis. Are there others?

How do you escape them? The standard UNIX way (\) doesn't work.
