VMware and Zoning question...

Hi.

I have 2 vmware esx 3.0 servers that i want to zone so that they can use a single DS4700 LUN together.

Each server has 2 HBAs (hba1 hba2) and the DS4700 has 2 controllers with 2 ports each...

I've been going through the books, but can't seem to find the answer...

Should i create 2 zones:

Zone1 = Server1_HBA1, Server2_HBA1, DS4700_ctrlA_port1, DS4700_ctrlB_port1
Zone2 = Server1_HBA2, Server2_HBA2, DS4700_ctrlA_port2, DS4700_ctrlB_port2

Should i create 1 big zone?

Should i create 4 zones? One per HBAs?

Hummm...Found this while googling...

# Zoning — Zoning limits access to specific storage devices and increases security and decreases traffic over the network. If you use zoning, be sure that zoning on the SAN switch is set up properly and that all vmhba and the controllers of the disk array are in the same zone.

So i should have 1 zone, with everything?!?! Anyone do this?

There are WWNN, aliases, zones and zone sets. What I do is...

Get the WWNN for each device (host and storage) on the SAN. Create an alias for each WWNN and device so that I work with the alias (and it can make sense) Create a zone for each device. For example, if you have 2 hosts(host_a, host_b), 1 disk array(dmx_a) and 4 tape drives (lto_a, lto_b, lto_c, lto_d) the zones for host_a would be:
host_a - dmx_a
host_a - lto_a
host_a - lto_b
host_a - lto_c
host_a - lto_d

One host and one storage device per zone.

Then, once you have all your zones defined, you add them to a zoneset. Once you have all the zones added to the zoneset and the zoneset is saved, you activate the zoneset.
