Just installed TSM & TDP v6.4 on a Windows SQL server. The TDP version looks completely different than any of my previous installs and I have a couple questions:

1. Do you have to install VSS for version 6.4 to work properly?
2. Getting the error "Proxy authority has not been granted to this node"

I cannot tell from the docs if VSS is optional or required. Can someone clue me in here?

Also, not quite sure why I am seeing the "proxy" error message. I have over 100 TDP clients running and have never had to issue a "grant proxynode" command. Is this a new requirement for v6.4?

Thanks for any suggestions...

No cluster, standalone SQL server.

I did figure out that I can remove the 'BACKUPMethod vss' from the tdpsql.cfg file then VSS is not a requirement.
Still have not figured out how to do away with the 'grant proxynode' requirement.

Hi droach,

as far as i know you need the proxy node if you use VSS to make the backups on the SQL Server.
This is because the TDP uses the BA-Clients VSS functions to make the backup.
So the TDP node must be allowed on the TSM server to "work in the name of the BA-Client"

here is manual how to install and configure the tdp sql:

http://jackiechen.org/2012/06/12/tsm-6-3-install-data-protection-for-sql-server/

Also see the:

look for the TDP SQL part in the infocenter

I hope this helps :)

best regards!

Go in to TDP for sql and put the software into legacy mode. Thats the normal SQL TDP backups to TSM using the TDP/BA API etc.
The VSS method is a block-level type backup using the crappy microsoft VSS.
