TSM Policy settings for Content Manager

Hi All,
I'm supposed to set up TSM for CM and I'm confused:
I'm looking for some recommendations about policy settings for CM in TSM. Even official dox talks about what command I should use to set it up but no words about HOW CM AFFECTS TSM POLICY?!

Is it backup or archive object?
Is it ever expired by TSM or expiration is done on CM side ?
What about verions? Is versioning handled on CM side and each CM's object version is a separate entity on TSM side or is it like a regular file which goes under VERExists/VERDeleted settings?
