Has anybody got an idea on what could be causing this problem or what is needed to correct...?

The library has been rebooted and seems to be working again....but not certain for how long..?

Do you have the latest firmware? If not, have the firmware (for all subsystems) updated.

Also, there maybe a failing part - a switch (yes, the 3584 has data switch inside), maybe.

If this is a soft error - false positive on the hardware error - a reboot fixes things, and you may not see this again.

A reset was done of the library and it seemed to be working fine - Various Drives came up with a disabled condition afterwards, but were reanabled, and are working fine now.
library is doing full backups and is thrashing over 100 bits of media continually with out any more problems. So does look like it was a false possitive as you said above.
