TDP VS FCM

hi dears ,

i'm confusing about the differences between the TDP & FCM . what are the different both of them are making a backup for Databases !

also , to use the FCM is it must to configure the TDP as well , or it can work without it , please advise ...

TDP for SQL is the IBM's original Data Protection schema for SQL. It uses APIs to talk with the DB and TSM for Transaction LOG and Full/DIFF DB backups.

FCM or FlashCopy Manager is a new overlay with TDP for SQL to enable point-in-time snapshot backups. Needless to say, you need TDP installed for this to work.

To clarify, you can OPT NOT to work (backup) with a TSM Server (truly the TSM portion is for longer retention and DR) if your intent is short term Operational Recovery. In this case, you will store the resulting snapshot in a disk space, or SAN (like System XIV, or EMC with the rocket adapter, etc).
