Hi all

just wondering how other people are doing SQL DB backups that reside in VM's . Currently TSM for VE is backing up the VM, but the ones with SQL are causing issues where the DB is locking and causing applications to fail.

I am half thinking of excluding these VM's from VE backup, installing the BA client and TDP for SQL client on them and doing traditional backups

Just wondering if there is something on the VE side that can be done to keep the DB from locking when the snapshot is created.

thanks

DB is locking likely because of the MS VSS writer causing everything to quiescence.
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21678788 has some good info, and I think you can force Windows to do crash-consistent quiescing. https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1028881 That may or may not help with the performance impact.

I've ran into a limitation of the VSS writers and number of databases running on a Windows system so ended up putting on the traditional BA client and backing up the data that way. Its not ideal, but at the end of the day, data is protected. I know, not the issue you are running into, just saying - Yes I've had to implement a work around.
