Hi,

First time poster, new-ish SP admin.

I was wondering if I could ask your advice on something.

We have just started using the SnapDiff features of our New SP Server and NetApp solution,. Very helpful indeed in terms of performance.

We have a load of precopied data on there that we are planning on renaming the root folders when the migration finally goes live. My question is, if we rename the folders will that cause the incremental backup to backup the entire folder contents again? Or is the client clever enough to see that the file structure remains unchanged?

Thanks.

Welcome aboard.

Yes, it will back them up again.

Thanks. Any way to avoid this? The entire first backup will be marked to expire and replaced by a new full backup? Seems madness.

Yes, that's what will happen.

The full path of a file is stored as metadata for the file in question. So if the full path is different, it is a different file as far as the client is concerned. The client has no way to know that a directory was renamed, all it's able to do is determine that it's no longer there, and able to discover a new one.
