hello everybody,

we are currently migrating our datacenter at site A to site B.
We have a TSM Library manager and one library client with each a connection to a physical (used for monthly backups) and virtual library (used for daily backups).
The virtual tape library is moved as well to datacenter site B but the physical library not because we already have one at site B which we want to use (same model).
We also have new TSM Servers at the new location which will be used for daily backups, the only reason for moving the tsm servers from site A as well is the possibilty of we are being asked to restore monthly backups ...

We plan to move the physical tapes used so far for monthly backups which have a state of "Mountablenotinlib".

Question: can we checkin those tapes to the tape library at site B and a restore will work? Is there anything we have to change on tsm server level (declass / storage pool)?

Thanks for your feedback and any comments are welcome.

Hi,

not sure if I got it right ...
In general - you can switch libraries by removing the tapes from old one (checkout), putting it into new one (do the checkin) and updating the corresponding devclasses to use the new library.
In LibraryManager/LibraryClient situation you have to think about paths (defined on LM) for all the servers/drives etc.

There are few questions in your scenario - who owns (is the library manager) the PhysLibraryB (any server from siteB? LM on site A?) Which server will be the LM after migration?

I do not understand this:
the only reason for moving the tsm servers from site A as well is the possibilty of we are being asked to restore monthly backups ...
Can you clarify that for me?

Hi Harry,

The physical library at the destination is a library which is partitioned. We have already defined 2 drives for the library manager which will be migrated with db backup/restore.
What we plan to do is a db backup/restore from source to destination and power on the server and define the library with the same name but pointing to the new libr at siteB.

The monthly backups are done for exchange and fileserver data and are placed on the mentioned 2 servers. All are primary data have already been migrated but to be able to restore the monthly backups just in case we need to move the tsm servers as well (we are already taking about 2500 LTO3 volumes). The monthly backups are all brought offsite (state mountablenotinlib) and are currently not in the library.
what we just wonder is if we can easily use backup/restore, use the same library name/paths, define new drives and just in case we need a restore checkin the volume required and restore the data.

Is that a way which should work? let me know if anything is unclear.

Thanks

Hi,

seems OK - your monthly backup tapes are in the StgPoolX - which uses DevClassX - and this (at the moment) points to LibraryA. In the need of restore you can point this DevClassX to any library (LibraryB_P2), do the checkin and restore.
You can reuse the library names - the only trick is having correct paths (which you know ...)
