I am facing issue with TSM 6.3.4.0 that New medias assigned for backup are getting marked with Write error while migration or backup operations on going. I suspected hardware fault and raised SR with vendor Dell they confirmed after verifying ITDT logs that there is no hardware error but its TSM product issue. I could not see any issues in my client backups but still facing issues with media.

Hi,

Dell should be able to say if there was a very bad tape that was in use. This happens now and then. If the drive is good, then get rid of the tape.

Set tape to readonly, then try a few move data XXX. If tape has damaged files, then try audit vol XXX

Next step is to recover data if the above did not do the job.

If it is a copy pool tape -> del vol XXX discard=yes. Then rebuild it with backup stg

If it is a primary pool tape, then set tape to destroyed, and restore volume from copy pool
Eject the bad tape and get rid of it securly.

If you fear the tape is not part of a copy pool, then data may be lost. You may try a data recovery company that may read data from the tape and write it to a new. Never done that myself though. Your milage will vary.

Good luck
