We use TSM Version 5.5, with a Tape Library TS3500. The Library Manager is defined on a separate TSM Instance (TSMLIB1).
Now we have a new NetApp 2040. This system is defined on another TSM Instance as the Library Manager (TSM02). We want to backup and restore the data from the 2040 into TSM. We’ve done all the configuration settings. But now, we have a problem with one of the steps: In IBM Redbook “Using the IBM System Storage N series with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager”, page 36, we must defining a path to a library for the NetApp 2040.
Must we define the path on the TSM02 and TSMLIB1 ? When we use the command to define the path for the Library on the TSMLIB1, TSM says that the node is unkwon. When we use the command to define the path on the TSM02, TSM says the chosen drive is unknown.

Or is it possible to backup and restore the NetApp 2040 by another way ?

We've found the answer: We must define the datamover and the node on the Library Manager, incl. Management Class, Policy Set and Domain. After it, we must define the Path.

Hi!

one question from here:
as i see you need dedicated drives in a dedicated virtual library for the nas-backup, is this correct!?
because the type NAS in the devc is different?!?

I thought i had found this:
"Drives can be shared between the NAS devices and the Tivoli Storage Manager server."

but when i try to configure now, i get an error:
21.04.11 11:40:42 MESZANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command: DEFINE STGPOOL nas-tapepool TEST_01_3592J1A maxscratch=10 dataformat=netappdump (SESSION: 1665)
21.04.11 11:40:42 MESZANR2540E DEFINE STGPOOL: The "TEST_01_3592J1A" device class is not valid with the storage pool's data format. (SESSION: 1665)
and

TEST_01_3592J1A
Sequential
8
3592
DRIVE <- NAS??
DRIVES

so how should i be able to have two different formats for one devc!???

i am confused ;)

thanks

Have you defined the device class "TEST_01_3592J1A" in 3592 format?

PREDATAR Control23

no,

format is 'DRIVE'.
But that should be equal.. or even the equal problem ;)

At first i only read:

  1. Attach the SCSI library to the NAS file server or to the Tivoli Storage Manager server, or attach the ACSLS library or 349X library to the Tivoli Storage Manager server.
  2. Define the library with a library type of SCSI, ACSLS, or 349X.
  3. Define a device class for the tape drives.
  4. Define a storage pool for NAS backup media.
and then assumed a can use an existing device class to use with the NAS Pool.
IF i can ... please tell me how ;)

thanks!

PREDATAR Control23

the device type should be of NAS

for eg: "define devclass nasclass devtype=nas library=naslib mountretention=0
estcapacity=40g"

Hi!

yes, thats what i read in the help as well.
But if i do so, i need dedicated drives for backing up nas!?
I thought it could use the drives both for a tapepool (3592) and Nas. Just sharing the drives !?
Can i do this with ALMS!?

PREDATAR Control23

Hi

I never used ALMS though i had it configured in my libraries. also i did configured a nas backup with dedicated drives. :(

PREDATAR Control23

one more :)
when i do
sysconfig -t
i get:

Tape drive (bck01id04-vdma:9.126) IBM 3592 Model J1A
rst0l - rewind device, format is: 300GB
nrst0l - no rewind device, format is: 300GB
urst0l - unload/reload device, format is: 300GB
...
...

so how do i match the drives with the special file names in hp/ux?
normally we have /dev/rmt/drivename

!?!? any examples? ;)

thanks!

try comparing the wwns of rmt,*rst*

lscfg -v rmt*
lsdev -C|grep rmt

Hi!

i am really confused ;)
IBM says:
How do you want to use the tape drives in the library?
– Dedicate all tape drives to NDMP operations.
– Dedicate some tape drives to NDMP operations and others to traditional
Tivoli Storage Manager operations.
Share tape drives between NDMP operations and traditional Tivoli Storage
Manager operations.

But no clue how to do the config if i want the last option!!
How did you configure you NAS-Backup?

Hi,

define the library and the path from the server to the library. Then define the drives and corresponding paths from the TSM server to the drives. Now the device class of corresponding type (like LTO) using this very library and stgpools - this is used for normal TSM backups.
Now for the NDMP part.
Define the NAS node and the datamover.
Define paths from the datamover to the drives (you do not need to define the path from datamover to the library - TSM is asked to mount the tape to the drive directly - as it have the path to the library defined it does not need to forward the mount command through the filer).
Define the device class of type NAS using the same library as the other device class and corresponding stgpools.

Does that make sense?

Yes it does.

but somehow i did not know that i can define 2 deviceclasses within one virtual library, sharing drives :)
And with that config i can backup LANFREE to from the NAS-Filer to the drive?

but i will try that.
thanks.

<EDIT>
works fine!
did not test request from both device classes ... but will soon :)
</EDIT>
