Permission changes creating new backup on linux node (RedHat 5.4)

Hi there, can anyone tell me if permission changes will create a new version/duplicate backup in the same way that TSM handles permission changes on Windows?

I have a server that suddenly jumped capacity considerably and I am suspecting that the sys admin changed permissions and TSM is now creating duplicate data. Please advise.
