Hi TSMers,
I'm trying to do some performance tuning on this environment:

  • Server: P7 lpar, TSM 7.1 on AIX 7.1, 8 FC (NPIV, 4 for disks 4 for VTL)
  • MediaServer: FlashCopy Manager offload server on AIX 7.1, Oracle 10, TDP for Oracle 5.5.1, TSM API 6.1.0.0, 8 FC (NPIV, 4 for disks 4 for VTL)
  • VIOS: DISK fc traffic and TAPE fc traffic goes on different 8Gb FC HBAs.
  • Storage: IBM DS8870, 4 controllers (2 port each one), 300GB 15K disks (SRC), 3TB 7.2K disks (TGT), 2 extpools (1 per server), rotate-extent LUNs
  • Storage: IBM TS7650, 15TB, 4 FC port.
  • VTL: IBM TS3500, 16 LTO3 drives (4 drives every FC), 2000slots, 1000cartdriges
  • SAN: 2 x Brocade DCX

From the MediaServer we can read from disks more than 1GB/sec (multiple dd commands) but rman backup (8 channel, 2 drives per FC) rarely goes to 300MB/sec (I mean in total, circa 70MB/sec per channel).
We found some Oracle presentation about optimizing RMAN performance and we did a "BACKUP VALIDATE" reading from disks at 700MB/sec and we are going to increase buffers and setting BACKUP_TAPE_IO_SLAVES.

Meanwhile, is there someone "heavily" using a TS7650?
Which performance can we expect from such configuration?

Are there any hints on RMAN and deduplication?
We set 10 files per set and backing up 20TB database and we just got a 3:1 deduplication ratio (as we have just 15TB physical space we just did 2 full backups).

Thanks to everyone will just read this long post. :)

I found some hints to get better deduplication (FILEPERSET=1) but speed dropped to less than 250MB/sec...
