never done BARE METAL RESTORE

hi,

seeking your assistance on this, badly need this help.

SERVER is Physical
CLIENT WINDOWS Version: Windows Server 2008 Standard Service Pack 2
Client TSM version: Client Version 7, Release 1, Level 8.6

the disk will be replaced and we need to make sure we are ok with the backup. is there a way to make system backup BOOTABLE/ISO but without the DVD/CD?

TSM cannot do bare metal restore since the TSM Client needs to be loaded and for it work, a base OS needs to be installed.

What you need to do is:

- make sure you have the latest backup of the node
- replace hardware
- install the OS as much as close to the original OS BUT NOT ANY HIGHER.
- install the TSM BA Client
- configure the BA Client the same as the old setting
- do a restore of the system state
- reboot
- restore other files/programs/data as needed

That procedure is only recommended for Windows 2003 and earlier. ASR restore is the only method recommended and supported by Microsoft. It's possible to do that with Spectrum Protect and WinPE.

Instead of creating a WinPE CD or DVD, you'd have to do a bootable USB drive. Check on the Microsoft website if they have any instructions on how to do a bootable WinPE USB drive.

Does not really matter for any version of Windoze as the procedure I outlined is still what we use and works well. Not all Admins does ASR backup.

It's true that it works in many cases. However, it will be hard to get support from Microsoft and/or IBM if it fails.

Also, starting at 8.1, the client doesn't let you do an online systemstate restore:

If you try to restore the system state with the dsmc restore systemstate command, from the backup-archive client GUI, or from the web client, the following message is displayed:
ANS5189E Online SystemState restore has been deprecated. Please use offline WinPE method for performing system state restore.

For this reason, an image backup is desirable except for physical servers. Since most implementations are now VM, going image level backups is the sure way.

Sadly, VEEAM does this better than SPP. So, we are shifting to VEEAM except for a few servers (nodes) that will remain on TSM for legacy reasons.
