I'm setting up NDMP backups for the 1st time and have read countless threads on the subject. Unfortunately, I still can't seem to get a handle on how retention works. I've been asked to duplicate our standard incremental retention policy for our NDMP backups:

vere - 3
verd - 2
rete - 90
reto - 90

Can this be done? My thinking is "no" since NDMP settings pertain to the full/diff backup images and not each individual client file. In other words, there's no way to guarantee keeping 3 versions of every client file unless you have vere=NL which would eventually chew up all your tape space.

Hi there, NDMP are block level backup which you could only do with Full/Diff backup, and the data format of such data are actaully not stored is TSM storage hierarchy. (p.s. you could not reclaim volumes that are in NDMP format)
You could only control the retention period with verexists settings.
