I know the NDMP backups have been changed a lot in terms what can or cannot do. Years ago, I understand NDMP can do full backup and then differential (back up changes from last full). Upon this, we will have periodically do full backup.

Can NDMP backup support incremental backup today, or still the same?

Second question, if I wanted to check what is the value of "hladdress" defined for the NAS IP, how do I do that?

Thanks!

3rd question:
Is NDMP backup is based on SnapShots on the storage array?

As far as I know, NDMP backups are still just FULLs and DIFFs (not incremental).

BACKUP NAS and BACKUP NODE do not include snapshots. Here is a link for how snapshots can be backed up from a NetApp device:
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowled...p_restore.html#t_ndmp_snapshot_backup_restore

A couple ways to list the NAS IP address:

q datamover <datamover name> t=nas f=d
select * from datamovers

Hope this helps.

Spectrum Protect has very archaic NDMP support. You need to be able to take advantage of Change File Tracking on the NAS system, and IBM doesn't seem to be able to get it done. Change file tracking allows your backup process to bypass the onerous tree-walk, and just capture the files you came for.

This was a key decision point for moving to Commvault for my firm.

mikeymac,
Your answer seems what I am looking for.
So, TSM NDMP backup is not using SnapShots technology, and just stream like backup? I am a little confused by it.
based on my understanding, it will do full backup, and then several differentials, and then full again...
Every time when I do either full or differential, I will have to tree-walk? Even with TOC option?

1. SnapMirror to Tape:
We don't use/have tape, disks only here.

2. snapDiff requires additional and powerful servers, right?

I used SnapMirror to tape in days of yore. It worked pretty well...but since there's no tape here....

We never actually had SnapDiff at my shop (it was an additional fee that we were unwilling to pay). I don't see that any additional servers are required, no. But I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm full of it! :D
