PREDATAR Control23

I am about to start auditing licenses for TSM. Currently running 5.5 We have quite a complex network with many different OS and lots of different hardware configurations. From what I have been researching and getting information on, this is NOT going to be a pleasent process.
Someone told me that 6.1 has something built in to aid in this type of project, but I have yet to find it in any release notes or documentation. Does anyone know if this is true? If it is, is it worth the time to do the upgrade before moving forward with this? I am fairly certain this is a pipe dream as I cant find anything on it, but I figured it was worth a shot to ask some of you guys that may have been through this before.

Thanks in advance.

By auditing licenses, I presume you mean counting the appropriate PVU so you are in compliance. Currently this is done manually which we have been doing.

I am not aware of any automated instance with TSM 6.1.

Thanks Moonbuddy, thats what I was afraid of. Rickarde, I cant find a whole lot of info, in English, on that site. Do you know the price?

Hi,
You can find more information on http://www.cristie.se/utility-box-english/
And the price is $15 USD per client and $5 USD for maintenance for each client you want to audit. Or $7 USD for each found CPU for one time use.

You can also email me at Christian.Svensson [AT] Cristie.se

Thanks
Christian

I read somewhere that IBM is going to start offering licenses on a per TB basis, anyone else seen this? I can't find anything on the IBM site.

PREDATAR Control23

I think they do that for HSM and de-dupe, but I'm not positive...

You can sign for TB lic if you are signing for more then $200' USD per year and pre-pay for 3 years maintenance.
If you are a enterprise customer then sure. I do only know a couple of customers in north east Europe who has that.

Cheers
Christian

What version of TSM are you running?

As of 5.2 (I maybe off on the sub-level) the licensing model was changed to PVU. Thus, the audit license will not show any for node specific licenses as it used to prior to 5.2

PREDATAR Control23

5.5, What I am looking for is the current number of PVU licenses applied to the server. This has to be easier than im making it.

EDIT: Im not meaning the current amount being used, I have that data, what I am meaning is the current amount that the server is licensed for, the limit so to speak. I guess I will just have to talk to my IBM rep. Geez they sure do make it hard to manage license compliance...

Doing a "q license" will show you the number of instances that, as example, TDP for Oracle uses. However, this does not mean that you have a legitimate license for it.

As mentioned, the PVU process is used.

PREDATAR Control23

I guess im confused. I am expecting to find a way to view the available licenses, pvu, for the server, not the amount currently in use. If I keep adding new nodes and machines, then run audit licenses then it should reach a point where i break licenses correct? If not, and all of this is on the honor system I am going to pull all my hair out lol.

EDIT: I should clearify, I am looking for a total pvu that has been purchased for the tivoli server, doesent matter if they are in use or not.

If you read the previous postings, the way I track PVU is manually.

Others are saying an automated method which I have no idea if it works or not.

TSM is all open. It is up to you to make sure you have the correct numbers of lic.
You do only have a Lic file that tells you WORKING or NOT WORKING.
The numbers you see is from old days when TSM could count number of lic. (Node based lic).

It is an honor system with TSM. You do your own PVU calculation and purchase the license through your re-seller, IBM representative, etc. on an annually basis. This is what I see with my TSM environment and this is what was mentioned at TSM training. IBM trusts you (your organization) to provide the correct PVU for TSM licensing.

Hi

We are just installing this License Metric Tool. Our IBM reseller recommended we give it a go. I'm dubious about how useful it will be but I will happily report back any findings with it regarding TSM licensing.

Cheers
