hello
I would like to have a brief intro regarding HSM and how it intigrate with Exchange server

I 've tape library running with TSM server taking exchange backups

there is a SAN having alot free space

I want to keep 9 months old email database on tape library and the current data should be on SAN for fast retrival

to complete this task how HSM will help me? and what more components i required on exchange server there is TDP for exchange and B A client installed.

You want to archive the mail in the database not the database itself correct?

This isn't the product to do this.

We use SourceOne from EMC.

I totally agree with Trace on this. HSM is not the product to use on situations like this. HSM is designed for files and not for databases.

Unless the intention is to extract the PST files and use HSM for a tiered storage concept, I wouldn't use HSM for any database backup.

If you actually want to remove and archive old e-mails in order to keep the Exchange database at a reasonable level, you need to look into e-mail archiving tools (e.g. IBM commonstore, OpenText, and tons of others you can find on searchstorage.com)
