I have some files that are backed up and then moved abotu 30 days after creation to a filesystem/drirectory that is extremely large and cant be backed up easily. I am backing up the creation directory does TSM track the file by the OS deleted bit so it knows a moved file is still active on the server??

If you had moved a file away from a directory that you are backing up, TSM treats this as DELETED and retention policies kick in.

So, if you try to restore the file from within TSM, you will see that the file is inactive AS LONG as it is within the retention period. After which, TSM removes it from the list.

Correction - should read:

...you will see that the file is stll there and the other versions (depends on setting) inactive AS LONG as it is within...

Think of it this way, the full path and filename is actually the filename. So if you move /home1/file1 to /home2/file1, as far as Spectrum Protect is concerned, /home1/file1 was deleted, and you now have a new file named /home2/file1. Spectrum Protect doesn't monitor filesystems, so it's unaware of any file movements and has no way to know that it's the same file in a different location.
