I'm in the process of recovering a physical Windows 2003 server to a virtual machine. Is there a way to exclude the hal.dll file using the command line? I can exclude it using the GUI but the restore never progresses when I use the GUI.

No, it's not possible. With the command line, you can only specify what you want to restore, but not what you don't want.

You can try disabling no query restore in the GUI, that's probably affecting it. Here's how: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21319732

If you stick with the command line, best thing is probably delete or replace it after the restore, but before you reboot.
