DB backup confuseing

hi all

i want to know if the tsm server is down how can i restore it
shall i have the databse backup ,volhist &devconfig on external media

and how to backup db to external media

First things first.
What version of the TSM Server are we running and on what os?

Is this a new TSM Server setup?
If we are running TSM Server 6.X or 7.X, did we configure the TSM Server to backup the database?

If the TSM Server is down I would start the TSM Server in the foreground and watch the messages to see if there is a hint as to why the application will not start.
If there are no hints and we are running TSM Server 6.X or 7.X review the db2diag.log to see if we ran out of space on the file system.
If the TSM Server is down and if we are not able to start the application due to an issue with the
database.

If we are running TSM Server 7.X, here is the link to the TSM 7.1 Server server manual -
The volhist with TSM Server 6.X and 7.X are more important now more then ever.

With TSM Server 5.X, if you know the name(s) of the tape(s) volume(s) that contain(s) the current database backup you can still restore the database.

Yes...its preferred to have the TSM Server database backed up to a physical tape library.
You can backup the database to a virtual tape library or on to a SAN, if there are issue with the VTL or network issue with the SAN. These issues would need to be address first before you can attempt to restore the database.

Your going to need a current database backup and volhist.
Need to run db backup and backup volhist and/or backup devconfig on the TSM Server.
The devconfig, I would backup this up but this file you can manually create.

how to backup db to external media

The devclass is what going to be pointing to what ever tape library that you are going to be using.
