I've inherited an existing TSM installation with DRM, which runs nicely and I'm learning fast. Here's my question: "When is the best time to perform the full database backup for DRM?"

Currently, the daily maintenance script does (among other things) the following:

Backs up the Disk pool to the Copy Pool
Backs up the Tape pool to the Copy pool
Performs a full DB backup to tape
...
...
Expires inventory
Reclaims the Tape pool
Reclaims the Copy pool

Once these are complete, we check out tapes and take them off site.

Does it make sense to backup the database before doing the expiration and reclaims? Won't the database backup have the wrong metadata about where files are located on the tapes unless it is done AFTER the expire and reclaim tasks? Thanks in advance for any enlightenment.

I would have the DB backup after everything had completed:

Backs up the Disk pool to the Copy Pool
Backs up the Tape pool to the Copy pool
Expires inventory
Reclaims the Tape pool
Reclaims the Copy pool
Performs a full DB backup to tape
...
...

I have chosen to ba stg to my DR pool, then immediately ba db, in order to minimize the time the data is unprotected. After the DR media is ejected, THEN I start the migrations, expiration, copy active, and reclamations.

Excellent point. I've been waiting until late morning for reclamation to complete before being able to remove off-site volumes. I like your approach. Thanks.

It's really a personal preferrence...but this schedule seem to work for us...
- 21 LTO1 drives for onsite
- 12 1120 drives for offsite for Encryption.

* Daily Client scheduled 1700 - 0300 (5pm thru 3am)(Spread the work load)
* Expiration 0000 (midnight) until stop or scheduled to stop at 11am
* Storage pools and onsite backup to offsite (DR) starts at 2200 (10pm)
* 11am run the following via scheduled

1) Deletes expired DB entries
2) Backs up the DB (FULL)
3) Backs up the DB (SNAPSHOT)
4) Deletes old volhist entries
5) Backs up the device config
6) Backs up the volhistory
7) Resets the Log Maximum stat
8) Generates the DR script

* DR tapes pick up by courier at 2pm

* 2pm - 5pm storage pools migration to onsite tapes..
