We are facing a challenge on backing up our weekly data into the tape with the designed of our current setup. Here is our current configuration:-

Backup Server : p610 (AIX v5.2), with 1 processor and 1 GB of memory

Host agent to be backup: 16 consists of Windows, AIX Linux with Domino, Oracle and DB2 database

Total Disk Storage: 3 TB

Total Disk Usable : 2 TB

Total Disk for Weekly Backup: 1.6TB

Total Disk pool allocate in TSM Server: 200GB

Tape Library model : LTO 3582-L23 (2 x drives)

We always encounter TSM storage pool allocation full before the migration of the data from storage pool to tape clear up the space for the backup process to carry on.

What is the best design of the backup approach with further invest on hardware?

Try changing your migration ponts on the disk pool, I have a simalar setup but backup a lot more data than you do , I have set the Hi Migr to 50% and the Lo Migr to 25%, this seems to work for me also I would add at least 2 more drives so you can use 2 process for the migration and 2 process for the backup

Are you saying that you have 2TB available for TSM but only 200GB allocated?
Also, your weekly backups are 1.6TB?

I have a 470 GB disk pool and my weeky backups are in the order 2.5 TB

Allocate the whole 470GB to TSM (you said you allocated only 200GB). I think that in those 2.5TB to backup you maybe have big databases, I am correct? If yes, then send them directly to tape. Schedule them so you can have your two LTO drives working without contention.

Its falcon73 who is having the problem not I
