Hello,
I need your help about a backup problem on Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise (96 GB RAM Xeon E5649 2.53Ghz)

The total amount of backup is around 17 TB ( more or less 200k files ) and I should perform it within 24H. It is the first time that we try to backup these files.

The server has got a dedicated 10Gb Eth but in this moment, when the backup runs, it is used between 10 to 15% .

How could improve this "throughput ".
The option "free lan backup" in this moment is not possible because the server hasn't got the fc card on board.

Many Thanks

Happy Easter to all

Performance issues are the toughest since there are no error message to go by.
We only see the end results and there are no easy way to work out exactly what is causing your problem. Take one thing at time - is the problem with TSM,, or with the os, or with the hardware, or the network.

Will need more information.

What is the full version of the TSM Server and operating system.

What is the full version of the TSM B/A Client that is hosted on the Windows 2008.
If the issue is not with the TSM B/A Client.

Using LAN-free data movement is best with Tivoli Storage Manager Data Protection products and API clients that backup and restore large objects, such as Tivoli Storage Manager for Mail, Tivoli Storage Manager for Databases, and Tivoli Storage Manager for Enterprise Resource Planning.

What is the full version of the TDP?
What application, and version, are we backing up via the TDP?
What is the full version of the TSM API that the TDP use to communicate with the TSM Server?

When did the issue started? Does the issue occur during schedule backup and/or manual backup?

Were there recent changes to the dsm.opt?
If the issue only occur during a schedule backup, did we stop and restart the schedule service?

What settings do we have in the dsm.opt file?
Memoryeffieientbackup is this parameter set in the dsm.opt?

If we ftp a large file from the Windows os that is hosting the TSM B/A Client to the os that is hosting the TSM Server and visa versa. What is the transfer rate like?

Is there an anti-virus scan running at the time of the backup.
What are the size of the files that the TSM B/A Client are backing up?
Is the issue with this one node?

Is the data going directly to a disk pool or a tape pool?

the % used on 10Gb eth is around 5%..
What was the % use to be?
What is the expected % ?

How many nodes are backing up to the TSM Server?
Is the issue with just one node or other nodes encountering the same issue?
How busy is the TSM Server?
Do we only have one TSM Server within the company?
If not and if we can do this as a test, are the results the same if we backup to another TSM Server?

Here is a link to the TSM 7.1 Performance Tuning

Good Luck,
Sias
