I've been tasked to upgrade the TSM infrastructure to a new system. It is currently running TSM 5.5.2 on RHEL 5.2. The new system will be TSM 8.1 on RHEL 7.3. There is almost no data on disk, it's all on tape, and the library will be moving to the new system and having the drives upgraded from LTO4 to LTO7.

I've been trying to go through anything I can find to help with the scenario, but I can find anything quite the same, though a few similar.

Because of the versions of RHEL, and TSM compatibility issues, I seem to be running into a bit of a snag. I've come up with the following as a rough guideline.

Start with TSM 5.5.2 on RHEL 5.2 (old server)
Upgrade TSM to 6.1 (old server)
Upgrade RHEL to 6 (old server)
Upgrade TSM to 7.1 (old server)
Install TSM 7.1 on RHEL 7 (new server)
Backup DB from old server and restore to new server
Upgrade TSM to 8.1 to finish (new server)

This method also allows me to move over the library to the new server.

Can any one suggest a better method or is this, with all of its steps, my best or only option? Let me also say that I'm not an Linux guy and I am assuming the Linux upgrade options are even possible.

Thanks for any advice.

Correction. I reviewed the steps and, because of compatibility issues, I've had to update to the following

  1. Start with TSM 5.5.2 running RHEL 5.2.
  2. Upgrade RHEL to 5.3 on old server
  3. Upgrade TSM to 6.3 on old server
  4. Upgrade RHEL to 6 on old server
  5. Upgrade TSM to 7.1 on old server
  6. Install TSM 7.1 on RHEL 7.3 on new server
  7. Backup DB from old server and restore to new server
  8. Upgrade TSM to 8.1 to finish (new server)
Thanks
