Hello world.

I've been strugling with this since few days. Been on many mmmmmmaaaaaaany other topics here but none is relating to mine.

Thing is that configuration of my lab is tsm 7.1 only two clients since it's lab, one client working perfectly but it does sends data to local attach drive. Second client has configured only few folders to send for tapes but it doesn't. Everything seems to be configured, tapes are visible with operation center they are also visible and attached to storage pool. After many many tries at the end i'm stocked with information from client ANS1329S server out of data storage space nothing more...

Please help........

and even worst when I do query libvol there's nothing to show at least what's tsm stating, is how it suppose to work? i mean tapes available to access but not assigned as a libvol and then when client try to backup something it uses it?

PREDATAR Control23

every minute i discover something more but still need help so q libvol is not showing anything because show slots is saying : slot 0, status Full, element number 1024 therefore how i can change that status to allocated?

PREDATAR Control23

Here's some background before we go too far:
show slots: that gives you the physical inventory of the library, reported by the library to TSM
query libvolume: gives you the volumes that are checked in the TSM's library inventory

So, show slots shows the tapes and q libvolume doesn't, that means the tapes are physically in the library, but are not checked in to TSM.

So checkin all the scratch first, then the private. Use search=yes since they are already inside the library.

PREDATAR Control23

ok other than following you i went thru many possible configuratoins all failed. So did revert snapshot removed volumes which were under q vol and decided to make checkin with mixture of you and what i gathered so far.

checkin libvol tsmlib tsm0008L status=private and gave it reply 007 cause that was requirement what i did received is even more confusing : ANR8358E All entry/exit ports of library are empty... well i wonder how's that even possible since it's VTL of IBM library............ any suggestions?

You did not specify search=yes, so the default is search=bulk. The VTL emulates a real library, so TSM has no clue it's a VTL.

If the tape is inside the library (I know, VTL, but we use real terms even for virtual because they emulate physical), which it would be for a VTL, then you use search=yes, like I indicated earlier.

HELP CHECKIN LIBVOLUME for more info.

Also, I don't recommend checkin in tsm0008L as private, unless it's already defined to a storage pool. You will find it's much simpler to let TSM and the library work with scratch tapes, then manually assigning tapes. If you decide to use scratch, then all you need to do is:
checkin libvolume {libname} search=yes status=scratch
checkin libvolume {libname} search=yes status=private

Or if the tapes have never been labelle by TSM:
label libvolume {libname} search=yes checkin=scratch

HELP LABEL LIBVOLUME for more info.

and I'm back here stocked with place and nowhere to go....

PREDATAR Control23

ok so to confirm i remove all information about it from q volhist and there's none entry and then executed :

ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command: LABEL LIBVOLUME tsmlib
checkin=scratch search=yes labelsource=barcode overwrite=yes

Does show slots still show the same 4 tapes as before or is it empty now?

PREDATAR Control23

Sorry, I have no explanation.
- tapes are in library (confirmed by show slots)
- checkin as scratch failed because of problem reading label, it's fair to assume they are not labelled.
- label libvolume did not find those 4 tapes

One thing I find odd though, is that the volume names don't follow the LTO convention. It's supposed to end with L#, where # is the generation. So if generation 3 LTO, the volume name would end in L3, yours end in L. I'm not sure if it may cause problems or not, but may as well follow the standards, so you'll need to do that on your VTL.

Verify that the device class type is LTO (q dev f=d), and that the library is defined to it.

Once that is fixed, I'd restart the VTL and restart TSM in that order. Then retry to label the volumes.

If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas.

PREDATAR Control23

ok, not to discuss with you guys cause obviously you got way more knowledge in this topic, but quick question. Tsm server is not aware (neither system which keeps server) that it's virtual machine. Same goes to vtl, system sees robot on second end with proper serial number and everything so why it would have any kind of limitation (that limitation would have to be implemented on a fact that's vm and they are not aware of it)?

PREDATAR Control23

well guys partial success, other than struggling with os'es in the meantime I was able to narrow down problem to a ::::

bug:soft lockup cpu#0 stuck for 67s! dwriteq00001:2491

google don't know this, bing ...... happy happy times...
